Shaman Wolf and Scholar Wolf

Well then. It must have been in the earliest of times, in the past of before, when Milk-Lake was a puddle, and Mount Sümber a hill. Somewhere, there were living a shaman Wolf and a Scholar Wolf.

One day, the two wolves had gone to look for something to eat, but it so happened that no food could be found. As they were walking like that, they came upon a large herd of horses.

Shaman Wolf said: 'Let's catch and eat one of these.'

Upon which Scholar Wolf said: 'One can't eat these, let's find something from another place and eat that.'

Shaman Wolf said: 'I have become hungry and thirsty, wouldn't it be nice to eat a barren mare from these, and go to the taiga and lay down for a quiet nap?' and he ran towards a black barren mare within the herd.

Shaman Wolf and Scholar Wolf attacked the black barren mare and killed it and started eating.

As they were eating it, Shaman Wolf said: 'So you are a scholar, you sure know something, analyse it please.'

Scholar Wolf said: 'So be it, one should not eat to the point that one is overstuffed. Eventually, that would turn out rather badly.'

Thereupon Scholar Wolf said: 'So you are a shaman, you sure can tell something, shamanise please.'

Shaman Wolf shamanised and shamanised and said: 'The thing is that none will come here, and after we have eaten our belly full until it stands stiff, we can leave while stepping at ease.'

Thereupon Scholar Wolf said: 'Me, I will not eat until I'm stuffed, I will just eat as is fit.'

Shaman Wolf braced himself, his eyes flashed, his troath throttled, and he gobbled up what he had torn to pieces chunk-wise, and he gobbled up what he had ripped off likewise, and he sure kept eating until his guts got bloated and he choked.

Well then. As he was eating like that, it seemed a sound that was not just a sound, and a shout that was not just a shout rose up, and five or six horsemen appeared.

The two wolves went off to the taiga and mountain ridges, you name it. The horsemen came, without there being a way to escape from them.

Shaman Wolf dropped behind and lay down far from any of them, as he had eaten so much that he was bloated, and as he was unable to rise, Scholar Wolf scolded him: 'Why are you such a liar, have you seen it, it means we are to die now!'

The horsemen beat Shaman Wolf, who was not able to go away, to death.

Scholar Wolf could flash towards his woods and mountain forest without being overtaken because he was light-footed.

The story Shaman Wolf and Scholar Wolf, told by the old storyteller Monggush Khürgül-ool Sazyg-Khunaevich (born in 1908) of the sovkhoz "Süt-Khöl" [Milk-Lake] in Aldan Maadyr in the district Chöön-Khemchik, was written down by the tractor driver Ondar Darys of that locality.
